So my birthday is coming up.
And it's not that I don't like birthdays anymore, but every year they seem that little bit less fun. When you were five and sick on sugar and attention, there was literally no better thing ever.
Like, ever.
But now you're almost seventeen, and college is looming over the horizon, and you're starting to realize that Responsibility Is Not Your Friend.
Plus there's the party and the wish list.
The wish list especially. I guilt myself unnecessarily over asking my parents for things. Like, I'm scared they'll feel they need to get them for me, which isn't true. But at the same time, I kind of really, really, REALLY want Starcraft II.
And thus I weigh my love of my parents against a videogame.
On top of that, I never had a sweet sixteen, because I wanted to do something completely epic with my friends, like a giant pie fight (I'd done that for fifth grade and I can't reuse ideas) or a massive rebellion in school culminating in the student body taking power. I mean what.
[Power to the people. Let no threat of suspension kill our completely selfish righteous fury]
So no, I'm not having a party, I'm just going to guilt myself over not having one.
But whatever, sooner or later my birthday's going to roll over me anyway, and the less I acknowledge it, the more likely one of my friends will do something outrageous to me, like paint my locker bright pink.
Yeah, they're threatening to do that.
I love my friends.
Favorite sentence: "And thus I weigh my love of my parents against a videogame."
ReplyDelete(And the paragraph that follows this favorite sentence ends with a confusing and seemingly incomplete sentence?)
Good luck coming up with something worthy to do to mark your birthday!
POWER TO THE PEOPLE. I would very much like to instigate a massive uprising against educational totalitarianism.
ReplyDelete...
Then again, without school I would probably revert to a zombie-like state in which StarCraft II (actually, like you, StarCraft II is still on my wish-list.) and Hot Cheetos would be the sole motivation of my existence on this Earth.
Whatever.
Moral of the comment: school is not not worth it.
Sidenote: I hear that bright pink lockers are 'in' this year; you have some great friends.
WE LOVE YOU TOO!!! :D But seriously, we should do something for your birthday. Like go see Pitch Perfect. (HINT HINT NUDGE NUDGE PEOPLE)
ReplyDeleteRuth! HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY!
ReplyDeleteI totally can relate to this post. The only reason I had a birthday party for my 15th birthday was because my parents pretty much forced me to. Yes mom, I do have friends, I just don't want to bother planning a party.
I'm certain that we will make sure your birthday is unforgettable.
Take that remark however you want. *insert evil laugh here*
O.O
DeleteYeah, birthdays do tend to be a bit of a drag as you get older. In fact, I'm probably more excited about going birdwatching in the cold, dreary, windy weather at Clinton Lake (an annual Audubon Society event that happens around the same time as my birthday) than getting presents or eating cake. People tend to give me books, which I DON'T HAVE TIME TO READ BECAUSE NOVEMBER IS TIME FOR WRITING BOOKS AAAAAAAAAAA!!!.
ReplyDeleteStill, you should be excited! You're turning 17, and 17 is special because...
because... wait, that's not voting age... um... because...
um, it's the most important number in "The Phantom Tollbooth"?
Whatever.
Haha I have the same conundrum every year around this time as well. My birthday is early November (soon!), and I haven't had a birthday party in over two years. I think as we grow older, we tend to ignore these celebrations, but birthday parties are awesome and you get presents. Just like you, I feel like I am too busy to organize a birthday party, but sometimes the best ones are the simple ones that don't need planning. Happy Early Birthday!
ReplyDeleteYO HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
ReplyDeleteBirthdays are quite depressing sometimes especially when everyone in your family forgets it's your birthday. Then you go through that awkward period in the house where your parents finally notice you're anticipating something, but doesn't know what it is. The looks on their faces as I burst their bubble of forgetfulness is quite priceless.
And you're turning 17? Wow I did not know you are older than me.
And as Arch mentioned, 17 years old... many special privileges, no?
Awk.
Today is your birthday, right? The 11th of October?
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!
EDIT: Wow, the CAPTCHA for this comment was "17". Interesting coincidence...or CONSPIRACY?
I HOPE YOU LIKED YOUR LOCKER RUE. <3 BIRTHDAY MAGIC
ReplyDeleteI really did. <3
